TESTIMONIALS

"Thanks to your help [K] has attained A maths B in physics [CGSE]." [August 2014]

"I got my [CGSE] results back today and I'm pleased and just wanted to thank you again for your help I wouldn't have got the marks I've got without you." [August 2014]

"Just to let you know I had As in my two maths [A-Levels] ... Thank you very much for all your help, my whole maths work improved so much from all your work that I can't thank you enough for it. So now I'm off to Cardiff in September for Mech Eng." [August 2014]

"Just wanted to say thak you: [L] got a B Maths; B Biology; C Chem; C Physics. Very proud and thank you for all your help [with the GCSEs]." [August 21014].

"Hi there. Really good news. [R]  got her English [A-Level] resit result. She went from an E to an A. Thank you very much for your help.  And I know she also worked really hard" [March 2014].

"I write in support of Patrick Jemmer’s application for admission to Fellowship of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. My Son [G] found his mathematics A level course challenging and we had sourced tutoring for him previously that did not achieve a great deal due to the tutoring style, however, [G] was determined to grasp the concepts required and requested that we source an alternative tutor.  I approached Patrick who, through his role with Study Help UK, felt that he could embark on a programme with my Son. [G] was inspired by Patrick's knowledge and passion for the subject and in particular his ability to explain what the questions were asking of him by using a variety of scenario based methods. This allowed [G] to gain a wider understanding of how to plan and approach the calculations required and enabled him to visualise the question, made them come alive in a multi dimensional way rather than just as plan text on an exam paper. Having set the scene Patrick was very effective at assisting [G] with methodology tactics explaining different formats that really worked well for [G]  in getting to grip with complex subject areas. Patrick really is a role model and ambassador for mathematics, he is always professional in his approach and willing to assist above and beyond the traditional student / tutor partnership and has a genuine interest in creating knowledge, enthusiasm and confidence amongst his students. I believe that he has taught [G] more than just subject content, he has shown him a gateway to study and mindset skills that will remain with [G] for the duration of his studies." [June 2012] "

"Mr Jemmer has tutored my daughter [I] for two examinations in AS level mathematics during the course of this academic year. [I]'s feedback to me is that Mr Jemmer is an excellent teacher and he has been able to cover each of the topics in the exam in a methodical way that has been of great benefit to [her] and improved her confidence." [June 2012]

Our educational philosophy ...

"We love expressing creativity through learning and understanding new things, and we strive to excel in sharing our unique insights and in helping others to succeed in all their educational goals."

Education is a great gift and can be a wonderful experience under the right conditions for teacher and learner.

Our tutors have received special training in teaching and learning, in communication skills, and in aspects of psychology, all of which inform the ways we work with students / tutees / learners.

Our approach is to work alongside learners with the aim of facilitating them to discover and develop their own most suitable strategies and techniques for achieving their goals.

These goals can be very diverse: to feel more confident, to boost grades, to improve general skills, to pass specific exams, to gain entry to Universities, to write better reports, or to master  specific subjects or areas.

For us, “good learning” is not just about "passing the exam" but also about developing skills which are genuinely enriching to the individual, and useful throughout life. And, “good learning” does not have to be a “hard slog” – it can be “fun” whilst also achieving serious and lasting results.

Our main drive is a huge personal curiosity and a desire to explore, develop, and express creativity; to expand our understanding and insight; and to help others to do the same and become full-rounded individuals who contribute and enrich the lives of others and society in general.

Our tutors and lecturers are very down-to-earth, friendly, open, and approachable. We always take into account the learner's age, experience, starting-level and needs, and are very hard-working and adaptable in finding new and appropriate ways to get the required results for each individual.

We regularly ask for detailed feedback on our own performance as educators, and on the students' experience as learners in order to fine-tune our activities to optimise outcomes.

We "do our homework" each week, too! We are also happy to be available (as appropriate) for brief telephone, e-mail, or e-conferencing consultations between face-to-face sessions to facilitate the learning experience.

COURSES

History and Philosophy of Science: Part 1

The Birth of Modern Physics

Come and join us in exploring the story of the personalities and events that gave rise to the scientific discipline of physics as it is known today. By the end of the course you’ll have developed an understanding of the scientific method, and of the concepts and controversies which drove the development of this exciting and world-changing discipline.

The course is run as a series of interactive information sessions about the scientific content (with a course-book on CD-ROM, and visual aids), and guided discussions of the philosophical issues arising from the science.

No in-depth prior scientific knowledge will be assumed, and the aim is to gain insight into major modern scientific themes, their interactions, and developments, rather than to accrue detailed technical knowledge (10 weeks x 1 hour).

History and Philosophy of Science: Part 2

Patterns in Nature

Come with us on our journey into the heart of the atom, and out again into the vastness of the universe. We’ll investigate all kinds of patterns in nature and the (often unexpected) relations between them. We start from the distribution of “electron clouds” and the shapes of the molecules they produce; to the mysteries of quarks, mesons, leptons, and gluons; to immortal rabbits, with booming, busting and “chaotic” populations; also taking in the geometry of beautiful faces, bodies, and buildings (10 weeks x 1 hour).

Basic Ideas in Science

This course, pitched at about GCSE-level is designed for people who feel they’ve “missed out” when at school on getting to grips with the basic ideas of modern science. We’ll look at loads of interesting and important ideas, ranging from forces and friction (in physics), to elements and electrolysis (in chemistry), to respiration and photosynthesis (in biology). The sessions will be very interactive, and designed to stimulate you and allow you to have fun whilst gaining a good insight into how these ideas all fit together to give a description of the world (10 weeks x 1 hour).

Basic Ideas in Maths

This course, pitched at about GCSE-level is designed for people who feel they’ve “missed out” when at school on getting to grips with the basic ideas of maths. We’ll look at loads of interesting and important ideas, ranging from numbers and equations, to shapes, areas, and volumes, to patterns and problem-solving. The sessions will be very interactive, and designed to stimulate you and allow you to have fun whilst gaining a good insight into how these ideas all fit together to enable you to use them with insight and confidence (10 weeks x 1 hour).

Basic Ideas in Computer Programming

This course is designed to help you get to grips with the basic ideas of computer programming. We’ll look at loads of interesting and important ideas, ranging from numbers and lists, to loops and conditions, to patterns and problem-solving. The sessions will be very interactive, and are designed to stimulate you and allow you to have fun whilst gaining a good insight into how these ideas all fit together in a very “hands-on” way (10 weeks x 1 hour).

“The Magic of Language and the Language of Magic”

Come and explore the way in which the language we use to talk to ourselves, and to other people, can actually “create the reality” of how we think, feel, and perceive. We’ll investigate basic ideas about “what language is” and “how language works,” and treat ourselves to a historical and philosophical “smörgåsbord” of titbits regarding some of the fascinating things that different people in different cultures, and at varying times, have had to say about the “magic of language” (and the “language of magic”!) (10 weeks x 1 hour).
